Thalidomide Returns To Treat Cancer

July 27, 2011

I’m unpleasantly surprised to read that Thalidomide has been approved to treat cancer. Does anyone have any thoughts on this idea? I would be particularly interested to hear from any Thalidomiders, if possible.

Thalidomide has been used to treat certain types of cancer (and other illnesses, including leprosy) for many years, very effectively. There are lots of counter-indications (not just pregnancy, such that they developed a replacement for it) but it’s a quite safe drug for many people.

As a thalidomider, I do not have a problem with this drug being used to help cancer victims. Anything that help people suffering cancer must be a good thing! With the proviso that it’s used in a fully disclosed and monitored way to prevent more children suffering the effects of poisoning in utero.
