Panorama: The Great Disability Scam- Disability Campaigner Sue Marsh Responds

January 29, 2013

Earlier today, I asked Sue Marsh for her reaction to last night’s Panorama. Here’s what she told me:

“Many thanks to the makers of last night’s Panorama for exposing some of the horrific assault facing sick and disabled people here in the UK in 2013. Sadly, a half hour show could only ever scratch the surface of the true extent of the horrors we are facing. We are leaving sick  and disabled people hungry, unable to wash or leave their homes, unemployed, unable to find housing and isolated. We should be ashamed and it’s only by making honest programmes like this one, with bravery, that we will stop this national disgrace.”

It’s fairly typical of the limitations of the 30-minute Panorama format (I know, I say this every time). It does try to put a case that the financial model isn’t working for people who are unemployed, much less for the disabled among them, but musters only two hard facts: the accusation of “parking” and the “LTB” jibe, both swifly rebutted (though not refuted) by the company involved.

The other aspect is that it shows once again that benefit reform is about providing slush funds for corporations, probably many of them with political connections. Instead of just giving people the money, they hire a company to “find them work” while they receive benefits, but that company does nothing and they get a payout. At a time when we are in recession and (supposedly) have to cut back on benefits to cut the deficit, this is really an inefficient way of doing it.
