Carer’s Allowance Earnings Threshold To Rise From May 2014

March 20, 2014

I have been campaigning for carers to be allowed to earn the minimum wage from paid work for years.

So when I read that the earnings threshold would rise from May, I was thrilled.

But, readers, that was until I saw the amount it will rise by.

£2 a week. £104 a year. A very, very small reward for carrying out a role they didn’t choose, 24/7, without complaining, for free apart from Carers Allowance and the earnings threshold- in total just over £150 a week.

If an employer paid that, they would be accused of expecting slave labour.

Why does the Government get away with it, then, readers?

Hard working people? Carers are the hardest working people on Earth. Hard working people, my left foot.

My elderly neighbour cared for her mother who was bedridden but with lots of additional needs (my neighbour is 75) her mum who sadly passed away two years ago was 99. I told my neighbour to apply for carers allowance three years ago. Social Services came out and assessed the family, obviously saw how hard it was for a 75 year old and her 81 year old husband to care for a 99 year old, hoisting her in and out of bed etc. They did not qualify for carers allowance but were offered an additional £1 a week on top of their pension. Yes, that is right £1 extra a week!!!! Out of principal they refused to accept such a generous offer.

Hubby full time carer gets carers allowance and income support total less than £100.00 a week. Carers employed by me on direct payment scheme £9.50 per hour. They do 28.5 hrs he does all the rest. How is this not slavery
