I’ve worked in the NHS for all my life and I do think it is a wonderful system. I am just so angry and ashamed that the hospital in Southampton seems to have made such a mess of things. The problem here seems to be communication. Surely someone could have sat down with those parents, offered them the second opinion they were entitled to and had a proper discussion as to the pros and cons of treatments. Where was the hospital social worker, whose job should be mediation or a patients representative or anyone with a little common sense to help those poor parents make their decisions? There was surely no need to threaten a care order.
