On The Subject Of Useless Work Skills Courses…

December 11, 2014

From Kate Belgrave:

As readers of this site will know, I’ve been chasing the DWP for details of the useless “work skills” and “employability skills” courses that JSA claimants must attend on the threat of sanctions… people report being forced to attend courses where they have to build towers out of drinking straws, roll marbles down tubes and tear up pieces of paper to reassemble in the interests of accquiring teamwork skills… Some people I’ve spoken to even said they were threatened when they dared to complain to providers about the courses they were sent on. This all goes on because ritual humiliation of and aggression towards people who are out of work is thought to be absolutely fine in our day and age….

The DWP press office ignored my questions about this, of course, so I sent the department an FOI. I asked for lists of providers of these courses, how funding streams work, how much providers like Reed and A4e charge for attendance on these courses, what sort of quality control is in place, what standards (if any) course providers must meet to provide these courses and if the courses are indeed compulsory – ie, why are people threatened with sanctions if they refuse to attend, or say a course does not match their skill set? Surely the DWP can share its own rules re: whether people are threatened with sanctions if they refuse to attend these so-called skills courses.

Needless to say, the DWP responded with a section 12 – cost of information extraction exceeding the £600 limit, etc. The DWP said it does hold some of the requested information, though, so I’ll be redrawing the request. I’m particularly interested in the costs of these courses. People have sent me some intriguing possible cost figures – the sort of money that would suggest these course providers are on course to have a very merry Christmas.

I would b interested if you can find out something for me how can you do a first aid course online? How can you do a manual handling course online? These were courses that the trainer reed employment offered to put me on to update my skills. I asked them how can you do first aid online? They gave me no real concrete answer other than when i challenged it that they would be looking into a free trainer to take the course. I found this very strange as its not something i would have ever thought you could do online as there is no practical. The same with manual handling you can visually see techniques and have it explained but if there is no way of actual doing the practical to assess you are competent how can it be recognized.

I have to agree with all of what you have said. I have held a First Aider qualification, getting it required actually doing procedures.

A lot of employers now also do Manual Handling e-learning courses online, once you complete the online course you get a ” certificate to say you have dine it “, I think it could have more to do with cost cutting & employers covering their backs by saying ” you did the course ” if there was to be an accident at work.

Yeah its a heck of a lot cheaper i think it was £35 so that verses perhaps £80 for a course with a trainer but however i still think they are not covering all bases and it falls short of what should be provided as manditory training in that there is no practical

you cant do first aid online, you have to demonstrate to an examiner that you can actually give first aid in a safe and effective way. Otherwise you may as well not bother, as for building towers out of paper straws, I did that when I was at school and can remember it quite clearly I also remember learning nothing at all from it. These aren’t courses, they are for keeping an eye on the unemployed make sure they are not working, make sure they are not on drug etc, etc all they do is fill all your time up when you could be looking for a job. A CV writing course I have been on these several times, they say put a fancy boarder around your CV so it catches employers eyes, what’s the point when employers are bothered about what experience you have and don’t give a fig for your fancy boarders. Give me Strength

None of the CV writing courses can agree on their advice. I’ve been sent on 7 different ones – the most recent 4 can’t tell me how to feature my publishing record. The most recent couldn’t spell Curriculum Vitae. When they asked me what jobs I was looking for, the comment “did you know I’m better qualified than you are for your job?” doesn’t win you the respect of the tutor (their CV was up on the board as an example)
