“Benefit Sanctions Harmed My Mental Health”

September 7, 2015

The inflexibility of the benefit sanctions system is leading to people having their support taken away unfairly, the Labour MP Rebecca Long Bailey has said.

She told the Victoria Derbyshire programme the current system can penalise the most vulnerable in society.

Lee Curry received a four-week benefits sanction for failing to turn up to an appointment he was not told about.

He has since had his benefits reinstated on appeal, but says the sanction accentuated his depression.

I would put in an SAR for a clearly watermarked, copy or duplicate, letter they claim to have sent out, a copy of the proof of postage, a copy of the proof of receipt. It is obvious the DWP don’t do watermarked letters and cannot provide anything but a letter saying, “we posted the letter on DATE A and you should have received it on DATE B” So no proof of postage will be available and the person wins and they should refund all money stopped.
Even if they can manage a copy of the proof of postage, which is highly doubtful, they cannot provide the proof of receipt, and the old saying PROOF OF POSTAGE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE PROOF OF RECEIPT, applies. The sanctioned person wins hands down every time

unfortunately, while all that messing about is taking place, trying to prove the DWP didn’t send the letter, the victim, for victims they are, is struggling to eat, pay their bills and keep their home while trying not to slip further into the abyss of depression. or into if they are not already in it.its not just the depression either. its a large part of their 1 life taken away that they will never get back/ its side effects from the meds they are given for the depression. and its the agonising weening off once the stresses etc are taken away. then trying to live down that you’ve been there, come to terms with it AND try and get your life back. do you know that the first thing on most lists of side effects for most antidepressants is suicide? found that out when i was prescribed some.i was absolutely flabbergasted. took em straight back into docs n told HIM to take them. i coped without them.
