June 9, 2011

I’ve written another piece for the Guardian blogs, this time on the case of Winterbourne View and what should happen next.

Hiya SameDifference1, I read your Guardian article with interest, I found this part of it the most thought-provoking:

You wrote “Until last week, I thought CRB checks were overrated. I thought councils and employers took them too far. And sometimes they do – but, thanks to the case of Winterbourne View, I now understand the real importance of CRB checks. The sad thing is, we don’t know if Winterbourne View employees were ever given any. Even if they were, and even if these came back clear, that didn’t stop the abuse”.

That is what I find most worrying – that CRB checks coming back clear does not mean that person is not capable of abuse – nor an indication of whether they have abused before and just never been found out?

Very disturblng is that – how would it be possible to keep vulnerable people safe 24 hours 7 days a week without round-the-clock CCTV?

Dear God, is this what’s it’s come to – you can be 100% safe if you surrender 100% of your privacy??

What are you thinking?
