A Statement From The Founder Of The Welfare News Service
On terrible hate crimes being experienced by one of their bloggers. Same Difference would like to join the Welfare News Service in offering full support to this lady.
STATEMENT:
I am absolutely disgusted to find out that a lady who has done some guest blogs for us, and whom managed to set up their own online store to sell their arts despite being sick and disabled, has come under a barrage of attacks from a number of cruel individuals.
This lady has gone through a great deal in life and despite her disabilities refused to give in. Instead she chose to follow her dreams of setting up her own business, even whilst being hounded by callous individuals labelling her a fake and a scrounger because she claimed disability benefits. They did not believe that she was blind because she was capable of writing. They clearly need to learn a thing or two about blindness.
This lady did everything that was asked of her (and more) in finding work, despite the lack of any real help from the government or anyone else. Despite this she is still being bombarded by abuse to such a level that it has resulted in her health deteriorating. If society wants more people to come of benefits and into work this isn’t the way to make it happen.
The poor lady has now been forced to take her new business offline, due to the abuse she has received (and the resulting stress caused) and will probably have to go back to claiming the benefits she tried so hard to move away from.
Those responsible should be disgusted with themselves and both I and the Welfare News Service as a whole send our very best wishes to the lady involved. We hope those responsible are made fully accountable and punished for their actions as soon as reasonably possible.
The Welfare News Service will not tolerate any kind of abuse against our writers, including those who provide us with guest posts. This extends to our readers who send us letters and all others connected with our service.

Founder & Editor of the Welfare News Service

I would just like to add that any abuse targeted at our writers & bloggers will be reported to the police complete with all available evidence. Such behaviour should have no place in British society.

I would like to send my apologies to this poor woman for the behaviour of these ignorant people! I am disgusted nearly daily by the continual judgement and labelling of our countries disabled people. But while the government are not only allowing but encouraging there own departments to judge, ridicule and torment us on a regular basis I’m afraid it seems society will follow suit. Yet again I am in the process of requesting a home visit for a medical (that I have had for 5 years running) because the venue offered has 64 stairs to use in need of evacuation that they state in the letter “if you will be unable to manage this please call to make other arrangements” and I then have to be spoken down to on the phone, told I need to put it in writing, I need a letter that I will have to pay my dr for and only then will they consider it. Well if I could jump into action and do these thing within 7 days I think I would be working! My therapist advises me to do a hobby – if I could, like this poor woman I’m sure I would get the joy from it and also be working! When will people get it in to there thick skulls that disability is not a choice, never has been and never will!!

There should be no place to hide for bullies. It’s such a clear indication of indifference, weakness and complete thoughtlessness. Yet it continues to be an almost socially acceptable form of abuse. I thought that things were looking up with some initiatives that I had seen around workplace bullying and suchlike (and I only know of those, sadly, because of our familys experience) but this, and other recent stories of online bullying suggest that we haven’t yet taken enough steps in understanding the extent of this abusive behaviour. Just because it’s online, doesn’t mean it’s not “real”, but that seems to be the idea that is being perpetuated.
