A DWP Worker’s Story

October 7, 2013

Spotted on Facebook. They are not all bad!

Hi,
can you post this anon please. I work for the DWP I am going through a divorce caused by my depression at what i am doing each day. I am in a written warning for being off sick despite Atos saying on my OHS that i need time and less focus on my targets. My wife just can’t take anymore.
I can’t actually believe that I am working for these people- that I am partially to blame and part of what is being done to innocent people. I feel like a piece of shit and can see no way out I have worked for DWP since I left school 15 years ago and until two years ago I got a letter every year for having no sick time. Since then I have had a total of four weeks off each time signed off by my gp with work related stress depression and anxiety and now if I have more than 5 more days between now and next August I will be considered for dismissal. So many of us are ourselves becoming ill with what is happening but they want to use any excuse to get rid of us.
Your readers are not without support from a lot of us we are in this together. We all know we are easily replaced by outsourcing companies and we know that they won’t care. So many of us could have gone to better paid jobs in the private sector but we took pride in helping our customers who are often so vulnerable. Now the pressure is unbearable. We know its going to get much worse as this government push ahead with plans that colleagues who worked through the thatcher years say even she didn’t even consider.
All we can do your readers and us alike is hang in in there..

It’s disgraceful how ordinary people- claimants and staff – are being treated by the DWP and Atos. They are just bullies. The same thing is happening with council workers who are being purposely over-worked to breaking point, but if they go off sick with stress or any other illness, they are threatened (quite quickly) with dismissal. Stress is always seen as the fault of the individual, ie. they are too weak to cope, and therefore they must leave the job. The permanent workers are then replaced with temporary, cheaper agency workers. It’s a horrible atmosphere in which to work – everyone stressed out but unable to complain or even admit to being stressed for fear of losing their jobs.

My sympathies go out to you any your wife. It’s no fun being Cannon Fodder for the likes of IDS who will have no idea of the hell he’s putting ordinary people through – all in the name of his hate-filled ideology.
If you’re not a member of a Trade Union, join one TODAY. They can give you a lot of support-even if it’s only helping you realise that you’re NOT alone.
TBH, I’d look for another job anyway ;I have a distinct feeling that DWP’s days are numbered

My wife has MS, she understands what is going on, she works for DWP also, all that you see going on with Benefits is the doing of the higher ups in Whitehall, those who work at DWP have told those (higher ups) that what is being done is unworkable! Indeed the staff do not like what they are being told to do. Many staff that work for them have become very ill, heart attacks strokes, the list goes on, If you are wondering why the system is messed up, and claims not being sorted out, I can tell you this only 40% off staff are left to do the job, with all the cuts going on in departments…..

Perhaps you could email your local M.P and no 10 as we have to do this to get benefits. All those poor people with physical and mental health issues. Those of us that cannot and know not how to fight. Even more so perhaps you could be a martyr and go public let the media have your story as cover up after cover up and propaganda is allowing these evil people who have all the power to ruin all our lives. Join fight back groups and share with all your work colleagues who will all be (Those that have a heart) under the same duress as you were and are. This evil dictatorship that is the coalition lying through there teeth because we the little people cannot shout but together we can and will even if it kills us. pardon the pun.

@Same Difference…can you please link back to our original post…as it’s getting shared around people are questioning its veracity – we’re the only ones who can confirm this. It’s not of any use as a campaign tool unless we can source it. Thank you.

It’s tough doing the right thing. You have to tell it. The truth is the truth whether it’s covered or if it’s open. It doesn’t go away. You can hide it for a bit but it will come out in the end. Look at how it’s hurting to do this job. Look at the price you are paying. Your body and soul is telling you what’s right, at the very least, keep telling. Meanwhile, claimants do appreciate the decent people in the DWP. Kindness and humanity shines like a beacon.
