Daily Mail: Sainsburys ‘Will Not Renew’ Jack Monroe’s Contract After Cameron Tweet

November 25, 2014

Personally, readers, I am very upset to read this.

‘That’ Tweet from Jack Monroe only said what many disabled people and carers think, and have thought for a long time.

Also, Jack Monroe may be employed by Sainsbury’s, but the Tweet was sent from her personal account, in a personal capacity. Had she sent it from Sainsbury’s account, their actions may have made sense. However she didn’t- nor is she in a position of power or authority. She simply has a high profile- and that too mainly amongst bloggers and journalists.

Jack Monroe was simply participating in an online campaign when she sent that Tweet. She was expressing a personal opinion, but speaking for many who share that opinion who are literally unable to speak for themselves.

Yet she has experienced a great deal of abuse on Twitter since the Tweet was sent and made public.

Personally, I don’t think she deserves that abuse. She certainly doesn’t deserve to lose her job.

Readers, I realise that you may not agree. Please share your thoughts below.

Mike Sivier says his own Tweet on Cameron, which agreed with Monroe’s sentiments, was ignored by the Tories.

Updated 11am: Monroe says Sainsbury’s have not yet told her that her contract will not be renewed. Personally, I hope this means the Mail got it wrong, or exaggerated.

If Sainsbury’s are considering sacking her, I hope they reconsider. If they simply haven’t told her yet, I hope they reconsider and reveal that they were considering what the Mail reported, but reconsidered.

This post stays, because my opinions on Monroe and her Tweet are still true and my full support of her remains.

She deserved everything She got, and much much more. Sick & tired of malcontents and ingrates bemoaning their lot. Time to take some PERSONAL responsibility people…The State is not here to wipe your arse for you. Sort yourselves out, get a life, & stop looking for others to blame because your life has turned to crap!

Yeah? How did you work that out? How did Jack Monroe look for “others to blame”? You’re making too many presumptions. In fact, all you’ve done here is to vent your spleen about those whom you erroneously believe to be ‘scroungers’. But answer me this (if you can be arsed): what is the purpose of the state? Indeed, how was Monroe’s tweet in any way related to the state wiping one’s arse? Cameron does use his son to deflect criticism of his government’s ‘reforms’. Do you have private health insurance? I realise I’ve asked you lots of questions and I suspect I’ll get nothing but a stream of abuse for my trouble, but do at least try to use your brain (if you have one).

I take it you don’t approve of Cameron claiming Disability living Allowance for his son then? Considering that both he and Samantha are millionaires, they were more than able to have taken personal responsibility when their lives, as you so eloquently put it, turned to crap.
He was perfectly within his rights to claim the tax payer funded benefit, as he was to claim nappies etc from the NHS, but did he really NEED to? I expect he will also have his hand out for his state pension and winter fuel allowance when the time comes, unless the Tories have means tested it by then!

Many disabled/ill people need help financially, otherwise they would simply die, especially the ones who are never going to recover, and those who are just going to get worse. Many people become unemployed through no fault of their own, what are we supposed to do, leave them and their children to rot like the good old days?

Please don’t retort with the same old crap that people should have insurance against these things, in an ideal world everybody would, but people on the minimum wage struggle just to get by, never mind pay into insurance, ill-health, job loss and pension schemes! I suppose you would say they should study and get promoted, or get a better paid job? For every 1 person who gets promoted there are hundreds who don’t, regardless of hard work or merit. Most people will spend their entire lives on the bottom rungs of the ladder, regardless of what they do, simply because there are far far more low paid jobs than any other sort.

People need a living wage and, until businesses provide this,or there is a dramatic fall in rents etc, the state will always be having to help people and “top up” their wages. People cannot afford to put something by for a rainy day, a lot of working people cannot even afford their rent, for the first time ever, there are more WORKING people receiving housing benefit than unemployed people! These are not “malcontents” and “ingrates”, as you call them, but working people who “sorted thereselves out” and “took personal responsibility” – THEY WORK!!

Life is not black and white as you seem to think, it is thousands of shades of grey. Don’t judge others until you know EVERYTHING about them is my tip.

      Happy Christmas.

sainsbury’s have made a very wrong doing here, jack only wrote what people are saying he used his memory of his son, to try and gain votes even his wife looked shocked by his remarks and it should not be twisted against poor jack, i hope she takes it further for unfair dismissal in this case

Maybe we shouldn’t shop in Sainsbury’s then. What she said was TRUE and good for her for being brave enough to say it. I just wish some politicians were so brave. He has vilified the disabled of this country and done more than any other Prime Minister to make the lives of the disabled intolerable, yet claimed DLA for his own son when he could more than afford his care. The hypocracy astounds me!

Sainsbury’s have lost my business too. I agree wholeheartedly with Jack Monroes comment. I have seen Cameron do it time and time again!

So Ms Monroe is to be punished for telling the truth?. Following that logic IDS will become the next CEO. Well done Sainsburys.

you should have a right to express your opinion, she is not a Troll, and shouldn’t be made out to be one. Her treatment clearly show that our freedom of speech is being eroded and that without freedom of speech from the people democracy can’t exist.
