Disability Hate Crimes Up 213% Since 2007
The statistics, released by the Crown Prosecution Service, show that 4,000 cases have been brought since 2007 when the offence was introduced.
Cases have involved verbal abuse, kicking a guide dog, setting fire to a wheelchair or attacks on cars displaying the blue badge that allows those with mobility problems to park near their destination.
The devastating impact of the crime was highlighted in 2009 when Fiona Pilkington, 38, of Barwell, Leicestershire, killed herself and her 18-year-old disabled daughter Francesca after being targeted by yobs. Their bodies were found in a burnt-out car.
Last year 574 disability hate crime cases were recorded, compared with 183 in 2007/8. However, Stephen Brookes, of the UK Disability Hate Crime Network and Disability Rights charity, said the figures were probably much higher.
He said: “I believe the number of people actually suffering is equivalent to the number who report religious and race hate crime each year – 60,000.”
Former director of public prosecutions Ken MacDonald last year said the police and CPS regularly overlook the crime despite “lots and lots of cases involving disabled people being abused, injured, or murdered”.
A CPS spokesman said last night the body launched a Disability Hate Crime Action Plan in 2014 to tackle the issue.

The disabled are portrayed in the media and by politics as fraudulently claiming benefit.
Anyone on benefit is depicted as being a burden on the taxpayer and contributing nothing.
The state is inciting hatred on millions of people of all ages.
So-called sympathetic nice people sneer at me if I do get up out of a supermarket mobility scooter trolley and walk even one pace. So how are we to get about with pained feet and legs, they care not in the least.
Most of the people, not just the yobs, hate anyone on benefit, because the incitement is being done by the media and government.
Someone disabled and over 60 denied state pension payout since 2013, is just as liable to loss of disability benefit, benefit sanctions, workfare and Bedroom tax.
Someone chronic sick and/or disabled and over 60 is equally sneered at or spoken to abusively, if get up out of mobility scooter.
With state spending due to fall to 1930s levels, so before the 1945 welfare state, it can only get worse.
And the worse is that the disabled over 60s denied state pension payout since 2013 will end up with women born from 1953 and men born from 1951 with
NIL STATE PENSION FOR LIFE and
bulk of rest LESS NOT MORE state pension,
when this is sole food and fuel money in old age for over half of over 60s within the poor.
