Cannes Turned Away Amputee In Flats

May 20, 2015

An update on the story we covered yesterday:

Film producer Valeria Richter, who has part of her left foot amputated, says she was stopped at the Cannes Film Festival for not wearing high heels.

She told BBC 5 live red carpet officials pointed at her shoes and said: “No, no, this won’t work, you can’t get in like this.”

Ms Richter, who was eventually allowed in, spoke after Cannes was accused of turning away women in flat shoes.

Cames were quick to deny that the dress code required high heels, but we can’t say we believe them.

She could have worn closed high heels then sued them for discrimination and pain and suffering in the European Court og human rights

I am a wheelchair user and was once refused entry (by the manager) into a theatre auditorium on the grounds that I was a ‘fire hazard’. Fortunately, in this case, one of the cast members was a personal friend and when I telephoned her backstage she and the other members of the cast refused to go on unless i was allowed in (complete with wheelchair!). My advice to people with disabilities is, when possible, call the bluff of petty officials by standing up for your rights under the law (in the UK this is enshrined in the 2010 Equalities Act).
