Motion On PIP 20 Metre Rule Scheduled For Debate In The Lords

April 25, 2016

The Lords will discuss this motion sometime in the near future:

Motion to discuss the 20m PIP moving around category: The following is scheduled as a motion for debate in the Lords.

Baroness Thomas of Winchester to move to resolve that this House calls on Her Majesty’s Government to hold urgent talks with Disability Rights UK and the Disability Benefits Consortium to identify a mobility criterion in the Personal Independence Payment “moving around” assessment which is fairer than the current 20 metre distance, in the light of the impact on reassessed disabled claimants and the resulting large number of successful appeals.

that 20m rule is absolutely ridiculous. i live in a 1 bedroomed bungalow.measuring from the furthest corner of my tiny kitchen, through my small lounge (5 metres from kitchen door to hall door),through the tiny hall and into front facing bedroom down the side and around bottom of bed to the window in there is 16m so does that mean if i can walk to my front gate which is a bit further than the 20m rule allows (31m from my kitchen..i just measured it roughly by using my eyes. im good at measuring that way,.) walking by whatever means, be it walking stick or wheelchair even, i wouldnt get pip?even though its as far as i can walk>? need taxis to take me anywhere i need to go like drs. (theres a thing. our drs waiting room is massive. easily 20m from door to where you sign in. n wen yu are called yu could maybe have to go to room 20 something. which is much further. yet you have to manage ot somehow cos getting a home visit is pretty hard these days. its literally making people house bound and not encouraging them to get out into sun, fresh air, or get the bit of exercise they could get and need

There are a number of wheelchair users, as well as people who are really bad on their legs, in the Lords as it is – let’s see how many of them can walk 20m before needing help or sitting down etc. Now, if they can manage that then let them try to do 50m and then we’ll see just why the 20m is so wrong and that it needs putting back to 50m.
