MAIN--David-ClapsonThe family of David Clapson – the former soldier who recently died after his benefits were stopped as punishment for missing a meeting at the Jobcentre – have launched a petition calling for an inquiry into benefit sanctions.

In his sister’s own words:

“My brother, David Clapson, a diabetic ex-soldier, died starving and destitute because he was penalised by the Job Centre for missing a meeting.

“David had his £71.70 weekly allowance stopped meaning that he couldn’t afford food or electricity. He was penniless, starving and alone. His electricity card was out of credit meaning the fridge where he should have kept his diabetes insulin chilled was not working. Three weeks after his benefits were stopped he died from diabetic ketoacidosis – caused by not taking his insulin.

“David wasn’t a “scrounger”. He had worked for 29 years; 5 years in the Army – including two years in Northern Ireland…

Another death attributed to IDS but as always he passes the buck to others which is wrong
If he chipped in now and again and posted in the odd blog or forum like my Tory mp does then at least he would know where any pitfalls were and be on the ball for any questions that were put to him and to then put forward measures for correction
IDS needs to remember that all DWP policies are dealt with at a regional level and that negligence where a death has taken place will therefore be regional so the DWP director for that region will need to step up procedures to make sure then any negligence found that those staff can be reprimanded and sacked if guilty of any negligence

IDS would then be able to see first-hand on where the system was failing.
As it stands now all he knows is what some university tells him as a independent source where in reality he should look to the likes of myself who have been in the benefit system through ill health for over 35 years and he would then be able to see crystal clear on all pitfalls making further welfare reform deaths impossible through negligence

i have always maintained the welfare reform process to be very simple to undertake and that as my mp agrees with me confirms what I’m thinking but we both know it won’t happen as to the simplicity of it and the costs would be higher ?

As to how higher the costs would be remains unclear as neither of us are accountants and my time scale would be longer for the processing of claims but my way is a safe and secure way of delivering a set of standards that at its heart protects the likes of David Clapson who would still be alive if my simple set of regulations had been followed

my gold standard for welfare reform is the most logical of all procedures in which all claimants for ESA and PIP are dealt with in the claimants house only’ in this way accuracy is assured from the DWP / doctor visit so that before the visit all the medical details of the claimant are to hand and any input from the claimants carer can be put forward in a relaxed way so not causing any stress to the claimant

As a plus point all security checks can be done at the same time to make sure that the right person is receiving the correct set of benefits and that both ESA and PIP where applicable are dealt with at the same time to keep costs down
