York Disabled Residents’ Views Sought On City Centre Access

November 23, 2023

Disabled people in York are being asked for their views on how to make the city centre more accessible.

Disabled parking in pedestrianised areas was banned in 2021 to make way for anti-terror bollards, but the ban was overturned in October.

City of York Council said blue badge holders’ access to the city centre would be restored from 4 January.

Councillor Katie Lomas said it now wanted “a better understanding” of how to improve overall accessibility.

Ms Lomas, the authority’s executive member for equality, said: “Shaping the city centre so it is accessible for everyone is a key priority for us.

“By listening to and learning from the disabled community, including about how to improve blue badge access to the city, we will understand how to make sure the city is welcoming for everyone.

“We want to build a better understanding of how to make the city centre more accessible, in the short and longer-term and hear your views on all possible options.”

On 12 October, incoming Labour councillors reversed the ban following fierce opposition from disability campaigners.

    Sliding bollards

From 4 January, blue badge holders will be able to drive into the city centre when bollards are in operation from 10:30 GMT to 17:00 GMT. Access will be via staffed, sliding bollards at the junction of Goodramgate and Deangate. The exit will be via CCTV-controlled sliding bollards at Colliergate.

Once the security measures are complete, access for blue badge holders will also be via sliding bollards at Blake Street, through St Helen’s Square and out through CCTV-controlled sliding bollards at Lendal.

Residents and blue badge holders will continue to be able to drive into the city centre outside these hours, the council said.

Blue badge holders will be contacted about how to get involved in the consultation. The results of the consultation will be added to to the City Access Plan, the council said.

raising awareness of the fact that we can still choose to look glamorous in a wheelchair and sharing another memory of my 21st birthday, proving the wheels and high heels can be done means you have to use a wheelchair. I like any woman in their 20s like my hills that are use a set of wheels to get around. chair and we put on my wheels and I also put on my heels because I want to, and I enjoy passion and high heels. When is the disability doesn’t have a look so be afraid of the wheels and hills because many of us in our twenties/early teens, decide to embrace the wheels on the hills and we don’t have to look disable as I myself have many invisible disabilities, as well as visible disabilities. My wheelchair is not my disability eat with my ability to the just like everybody else I go to college I volunteer I do placement the same as any of the young student in their 20s from Grace for my own respite, so that I can gain access without having to fight the government for those who may, but they don’t see anything Leicester City because they again think that people should write a certain way if they need to do is just not true, that is the Miz, I plan to crossed with my post and sharing my story of Wales on hills or hills on wheels so come and look at my video to see how are you Grace, the high heels and the wheels wheelchair for any immobilisation outside of her home for respite centre, and uses other forms of Wales when out and about such as on wheels that I transfer into#EmbraceYourMobilityAidsAndLetItBecomePartOfYouAndShowYourPersonality even if that means of green poo, bright colours, because your wheelchair is the new

Work From Home Or Lose Benefits Says DWP

    November 22, 2023

Rishi Sunak will threaten to cut benefit payments to hundreds of thousands of people with mobility and mental-health problems unless they find work they can do from home.

The prime minister will tell them to find jobs or face a benefits cut of £4,680 a year if they do not in a bid to get more people back to work, according to reports.

It comes as part of a drive to slash the government’s welfare bill, with ministers insisting that many on benefits can no longer be “written off” as incapable of working thanks to the post-Covid boom in remote working.

In September, work and pensions secretary Mel Stride launched a consultation to overhaul the government’s work capability assessments, which determine whether someone is eligible to claim universal credit instead of working.

The consultation promised to reflect “the rise of flexible and home working and better employer support for disabled people and people with health conditions”.

At the time, Mr Sunak said he wanted to “help people take advantage of modern working environments“.

The response to the consultation is set to be published alongside the government’s autumn statement on Wednesday, according to The Times.

Universal credit claimants unable to walk 50 metres unaided do not have to look for a job under “limited capability for work and work-related activity” category. But this descriptor is expected to be removed, it reported.

It will mean that from 2025, hundreds of thousands of claimants will be hit by the “carrot and stick” approach.

The chancellor Jeremy Hunt last week warned as part of a wider crackdown that those who “coast” on benefits will lose handouts if they refuse to take a job.

Claimants deemed fit to work, but who fail to take steps to find employment, will be cut off from accessing benefits such as free prescriptions and dental treatment, help from energy suppliers and cheaper mobile phone packages.

The chancellor said the move, launched just days the autumn statement, was necessary to stop “anyone choosing to coast on the hard work of taxpayers”.

But the plans were condemned as hateful by senior Tories and potentially illegal by the head of Britain’s equalities watchdog.

Former deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine told The Independent that ministers should not “use the health service as a sanction”.

Tory minister Laura Trott on Tuesday brushed off suggestions that plans to encourage people with mental health or mobility problems to work from home are uncaring.

The chief secretary to the Treasury, told Sky News: “If you can work as a principle, you should work, and that is what the government believes. That’s been the thrust of all of our policies.

“Of course, there should be support for people to help them into work or to help them with issues that they’re facing, but ultimately, there is a duty on citizens that if they are able to go out to work, that’s what they should do.”

Boy With Rare Condition Gets All-Terrain Wheelchair

    November 21, 2023

A boy with a rare muscle-wasting condition has taken delivery of an “absolutely amazing” all-terrain wheelchair after a fundraising campaign.

Albert from Rushden in Northamptonshire helped raise money himself by climbing Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon in Wales with the former Wasps player, Jack Fleckney.

He was diagnosed with the genetic condition, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), at the age of three.

Albert, eight, is now unable to walk.

People with DMD get gradually weaker and their muscles degenerate – their mobility starts decreasing in early childhood and continues to get worse.

      ‘Gamechanger’

As time went on, it became clear that the limitations of Albert’s NHS electric wheelchair meant that he was missing out on opportunities.

His mum, Sonia, said: “Going to the seaside has been tricky.

“His dad can carry him across the sand but it’s not always easy to walk on sand yourself, let alone carry an eight-year-old.

“Being able to take this on the beach will be a game-changer.”

The family needed £16,000 to buy the new all-terrain wheelchair.

Former Wasps rugby player Fleckney volunteered to push and steer Albert and his existing chair up Yr Wyddfa as part of the fundraising effort.

He had met Albert at Denfield Park Primary School while he was helping with PE lessons.

More than 80 people, including Albert’s family and friends, joined the climb to the summit which took about four hours on June 3.

Sonia said the new chair was “like a little quad bike”.

“He’s in control of it but on the back it’s got assistance so we can take control if we need to, which he doesn’t like very much.

“It rises as well which will be really handy for days out like going to the zoo – it was quite awkward for him to see everything, because of people getting in the way, whereas with this he’ll be able to just rise himself up.”

Albert told BBC Radio Northampton: “It’s absolutely amazing. It lets me drive fast and have fun.”

Carlton-On-Trent: Blind Flood Victim Inundated With Gifts For Guide Dog

      November 20, 2023

A blind woman whose Nottinghamshire bungalow was flooded with sewage during Storm Babet has been inundated with gifts and donations from strangers.

Jeanette Stevens’ bungalow in Carlton-on-Trent was severely damaged when bad weather struck on 20 October.

She was left in tears after all the toys and bedding belonging to guide dog Koko had to be thrown away.

An appeal on social media has led to people donating more than £400 worth in gifts and donations.

Mrs Stevens was forced to evacuate her home when sewage and rain water “started coming through the floor”.

Her family later moved to temporary accommodation in Ollerton, said the Guide Dogs charity.

“The sewage and water was heading towards our bungalow that evening,” Mrs Stevens said.

“We thought it had settled, but then it started coming through the floor, so we had to get out.

“We had to throw most of Koko’s toys and bedding in the bin as they were covered in sewage, and I was just in tears.”

She posted an appeal in a closed Facebook group, ran by volunteers who support sight loss charity Guide Dogs, as she “just wanted a virtual hug”.

But Mrs Stevens then received about £150 in cash donations and £300 worth of toys and gifts for seven-year-old Koko.

She added: “People started asking for our address; first we received a £30 Amazon voucher.

“We then started receiving parcels and boxes for Koko, full of toys and donations for her and for us.

“I don’t know how to thank everyone who sent us something, but I can say they have given us hope and happiness.”

Tracey Getten, operations manager for Guide Dogs, based in Nottingham, added: “It’s wonderful that our wider Guide Dogs family have reached out to Jeanette and Koko.

“They have made them feel loved and cared for with their kind gifts and donations.”

England Cricket’s Learning Disability Side Prepare For Tri-Series In South Africa

        November 16, 2023

“People expect us to win – as long as we execute our skills and show our qualities, I don’t think we’ll go far wrong.”

It’s the kind of response you would expect from any international cricket captain on the eve of battle.

But Chris Edwards isn’t your average international cricket captain. And his isn’t your average international cricket side.

Edwards, whose England learning disability team take on hosts South Africa and Australia in a tri-series starting this weekend, have the kind of numbers Jos Buttler’s beleaguered white-ball team can only dream of at present.

Since 2010’s loss to Australia, England LD have gone unbeaten in any series – losing just twice in 35 games.

The most recent reverse, a T20 encounter in last summer’s Ashes success down under, was by just one run – the first time the team had ever played under lights.

England, on their way to a 7-1 series success, triumphed by 96 runs in the next game, opener Jack Perry smashing 118 off 63 balls.

It has been some ride for Edwards and his band of brothers.

Edwards, who turned 30 in March, made his England debut in 2009 at 16; vice-captain Jonny Gale turned 17 during his first tour in 2011. Four more of the 14-man travelling party – Dan Bowser, Robert Hewitt, Alex Jervis and Ronnie Jackson – took their respective bows together at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2015.

“It’s given me an identity,” Edwards says. “When I started, it was a massive taboo if someone had a learning disability – people weren’t educated about it. Now there’s an openness – more people coming forward, more youngsters wanting to play our game.

“This is who I am. Putting on this shirt is not an easy thing to achieve. You have to earn the right to wear it, and when you do, you have to understand what it means, and what the ethos of this squad means. For me, it’s massive.”

Gale, who like Edwards is on the autism spectrum, speaks eloquently about cricket’s value on a personal level – “a vehicle to help push you further, a car you can use to drive through life” – and the ambassadorial role he feels the players have.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about my numbers as well,” Gale laughs, “but at the same time it’s not as significant as helping society embrace disability more – and moving forwards.”

There are common mantras used by the backroom staff across England’s four disability sides – phrases such as ‘good behaviours’, or ‘people first, cricketers second’ crop up regularly.

Actions and words speak loudly in this set-up. Last weekend at Loughborough’s National Cricket Performance Centre, the squad – including newcomers Alfie Pyle (Variety Club Disability Sports Awards rising star for 2023), Ben Mason and Jaidev Charan – were put through fitness tests and fielding drills, and a series of batting and bowling scenarios.

Head coach Lauren Rowles is on her second trip with the squad, having inherited the job from the long-serving Derek Morgan.

“The advice he gave me was: ‘just be a good person’,” Rowles recalls. “People often ask what the differences are in coaching the LD lads – you just coach the person in front of you. Everybody has different needs, male, female, however they identify, whether they have a disability or not.”

What struck Rowles was the vibrancy of the set-up and the players’ appetite for work. “They love it, they love being around one another, they love learning,” she says. “They don’t get that many opportunities to get coached, so they just want to ask you questions and know what you know, so they can try and do what you say.”

After that resounding success in Australia, hopes are high that after three contests against each opponent, starting with Australia on Sunday, England will contest the final at Pretoria’s SuperSport Park on 19 November.

Edwards, who was awarded a British Empire Medal in 2021 for services to the game – his day job is disability cricket lead coach across Cheshire – won’t be taking anything for granted.

“We might be down as favourites, but as we’re playing T20 cricket, it probably suits the opposition better,” he says.

“The games are shorter and it gives them a chance. And Australia will focus on that one-run win – which still bugs everyone.”

David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived

        November 15, 2023

David Holmes vividly remembers the day he joined the Harry Potter stunt crew.

It was August 2000. The first film was in pre-production at a former Rolls-Royce engine factory converted into movie studios. And the filmmakers were still trying to decide how to convincingly bring some of the magic of JK Rowling’s best sellers to the cinema screen.

“My first day’s work was being the world’s first Quidditch player,” he recalls with a proud smile.

“We put a broomstick on the back of a truck and drove it down the runway at Leavesden Studios, with [director] Chris Columbus looking down a camera lens whooping and hollering, and saying ‘Yes, I think this is how we’re gonna do Quidditch.'”

Holmes, a talented young gymnast from Essex still in his late teens, was asked to become the main double for Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry, performing stunts that were deemed too risky for the film’s 11-year-old star. The pair quickly forged a friendship that endures until today.

“Dave, still, is one of the most important people in my life. As he has been for the last 20 years,” says Radcliffe.

“He was somebody that was so incredibly fun to hang out with when I was young.

“But then as I grew up he became a real guide to me, and kind of a mentor and someone who really looked out for me, and that really has just continued as we’ve grown.

“He was like my little brother on the films, and then grew to be one of my best friends,” agrees Holmes. “He’s always been there for me.”

It’s a powerful statement that’s backed up by devastating experience.

During the run-up to filming of the seventh story, The Deathly Hallows Part 1, in January 2009, Holmes was badly injured. Rehearsing a stunt where he was rapidly jerked back on a harness, he broke his neck.

The resulting spinal injury meant he was in hospital for several months. He’s permanently paralysed from the chest downwards and now uses a wheelchair.

Nearly 15 years later, he’s the subject of a documentary. David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived details his experiences and the way his close friendships with people including Radcliffe have been an important part of his life following the accident.

Holmes says that reflecting on his experiences for the documentary has been cathartic.

“Some of it is not the easiest of things to digest,” he says. “I just want to be honest. And honestly living with a broken neck is hard.

“I’ve said before, breaking my neck made a man of me.

“And looking back. I’m very grateful that I’ve managed to retain my sense of self, which is probably my biggest achievement.”

          Character and friendship

Holmes’s sense of positivity is a constant theme throughout the 90-minute film. Something that’s attributed to both his strong personality, and the close group of friends that surround him.

It feels more like a story of character and friendship than anything else.

“Yeah,” he agrees. “I’m very fortunate to have a lot of love in my life. And you know that message ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. Well, it takes a village to survive a spinal injury as well. And I have a large village of a lot of love so I’m very thankful for that.”

It’s a village that’s made up of the people he’s closest to, many of whom appear in the documentary. The group includes his friend and care assistant Tommy, fellow stunt performers Marc and Tolga, whom he worked with on the Potter series. As well as Radcliffe.

“Anyone that worked on that franchise for the whole lot is part of a giant family,” Holmes explains. “Just the amount of time we spent together, and the life experiences we’ve shared together.”

The production shows footage ranging from archive of them all joking around on the film set, to sitting by his bedside following the accident, to laughing with him in the present day as they all eat together at David’s home.

It also demonstrates the way he constantly wants to be looking forward, rather than reflecting too much on what has happened to him.

“Dave is, and has always been, an extraordinary person, before and after the accident,” says Daniel Radcliffe, who serves as an executive producer on the project.

“I want people to get to know my friend, because he’s so much fun, he’s so funny, he’s so smart, he’s so kind, and so generous.

“And just an amazing person to be around. That’s why I have wanted to share Dave with the world for so long.”

One example of David’s attitude towards life is the way he’s helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds for people in need of medical treatment.

“Wonderful thing, right,” he says with justifiable pride. “Like a silver lining on a very dark cloud. And to give back has always been important to me.

“To highlight the heroes that work in the NHS is something that we have been able to do on this project and I’m really proud of that. And so not just giving back financially, but giving back in awareness is really important to me.”

He’s also hopeful that the documentary will help him with his hopes of passing his skills and experience on to younger generations. His dream is a stunt school for young performers.

“I think unless you’re investing in youth, you’re not really investing in the whole human experience. The only thing that has real value in this world is opening doors for other people.

“I was fortunate enough to have a lot of doors open for me. And if I can do the same for other people whether they’re disabled or able bodied whether that’s in the film industry or in other aspects in life. I think giving back is the best of what we are as human.”

There’s little evidence of self pity in the documentary. And he is insistent that he wants those watching to take a hopeful message from it.

“In life you’re either a victim or a survivor, right. I choose to be a survivor, and if that has a knock-on effect for other people that are living with any hardships in life then that’s got to be a positive thing.

“It’s OK to be vulnerable. It’s OK to show that life’s not easy and ultimately not kind to you sometimes. But how you deal with it is a reflection on who you are. It’s important to rise above all the challenges, and just to embrace all of what life throws at you. The good and the bad.”

David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived will be available on Sky Documentaries from Saturday 18 Nov.

Disability Advocate’s Journey Ruined By Broken Lift At Cambridge Station

          November 14, 2023

A man who had to abandon his plans after getting stuck at two railway stations says accessibility provisions need to improve.

Isaac Harvey MBE travelled from London to Cambridge on Saturday but had to end his journey early after being cut off by issues including a broken lift.

Unable to leave Cambridge Station, he eventually returned home to Dagenham in a fruitless nine-hour round trip.

Greater Anglia, which manages Cambridge Station, said it was investigating.

Mr Harvey, who received an MBE on Wednesday from King Charles for services to people with disabilities, said his week had gone from “one extreme to another”.

He arrived in Cambridge ahead of a party but said he could not exit the train initially, as no ramp was available for his electric wheelchair.

After then being unable to reach the exit due to a broken lift, Mr Harvey said he and another wheelchair user were told they could travel to Ely, where an accessible taxi would be waiting for him.

However, once at Ely no taxi was available and instead they were told to return to Cambridge on another train that would be rerouted to an accessible platform, more than two hours after he originally arrived at Cambridge Station.

Problems continued when Greater Anglia staff informed Mr Harvey and his friend Laura Mathias, who he was travelling with, that an accessible taxi at Cambridge may not be available for over an hour and there was no guarantee one would be able to return them to the station for the last train back to London.

Unwilling to risk more issues, the pair said they “chose to call it a day” and headed back to their homes.

Mr Harvey got home at 00:20 GMT on Sunday, nine hours after his journey had started.

“I travel a lot,” Mr Harvey said. “I’ve had some really good journeys and really bad journeys and I said to my mum if this was my first train out I would have never travelled again.

“Obviously it’s very frustrating in this day and age, it shouldn’t be happening.

“But I’m very calm in these situations because I could easily be annoyed about a lot of things that happen daily, it’s good to have a calm head rather than be angry all the time.”

Mr Harvey said staff at Cambridge told him the lift was regularly out of order.

“It shows how one lift can make such a big impact – because that one lift all the rest of it happened,” he said.

“And it probably wasn’t thought about until I arrived.”

Mr Harvey said more should be done to make transport accessible to all.

“Having things accessible is not just for those who have disabilities, but it’s for everyone,” he said. “Anyone at any given time can acquire disability, may it be short or long term.”

Mr Harvey emphasised that the majority of staff he spoke to at both Cambridge and Ely stations were “really understanding and friendly” and were “also frustrated” by the issues.

          ‘Broken system’

Ms Mathias, from Manningtree in Essex, herself a diversity campaigner, said it had been an “eye-opening experience”.

“I’m not angry at any individual staff or taxi driver, in their own way they were trying to find work arounds.

“People were trying their best but it’s a broken system.”

“There were too many unnecessary obstacles along the way. It was exhausting and truly gutting to feel we had no choice but to just give up on our plans.”

A Greater Anglia spokesperson apologised for the issues, and said: “We will be trying to contact Mr Harvey to provide an apology to him and those travelling with him for letting them down.

“A full investigation will be conducted into what happened, with the clear aim of preventing a repetition of such an incident in future.”
