75,000 ESA Claimants Owed Thousands Each

The BBC has revealed that the DWP have made mistakes in calculating the employment and support allowance (ESA) of around 75,000 claimants. The total bill for putting things right, including extra staff time, could be as much as £500 million.
According to the BBC the errors began as far back as 2011 and involved claimants being forcibly moved from incapacity benefit (IB) to ESA. The errors continued through to the 2014-2015 benefit year.
It is not clear yet what the errors involve, the BBC say only that “assessors wrongly calculated the income of around 75,000 claimants.”
If the figures are correct it would suggest that, on average, the cost of putting things right for each claimant will be over £6,500.
The DWP are not denying the allegations.
They have admitted that they discovered the error last December and have so far contacted 1,000 affected claimants.

i would advise anyone thinking about claiming to think again as you will need to fill out many forms and it may well cause you more problems then you already have so be warned
they will come to you if they need too

You actually trust them to do the right thing then Nick? with their track record of underhand dealings and lies? if it were me, i would only wait so long then contact to ask if i am one of the affected. or get a solicitor or CAB to do it for me.

my dealings with them over 40 odd years now is that they only will abuse those that do not have professional carers
any hint of a active NHS pro carer or lawyer / mp then everything will be ok
my advice would still be to wait and see as there is a good chance the switch over went well

i SEE SOOOOOO if your an elderly disabled person with only basic income, fast being swallowed up by higher and higher household bills who cant afford to pay PROFFESSIONAL carers. (or if your a carer looking after your mother or father etc because YOU CARE about them, and dont want them being put ino a home where they could be mentally or physically abused(and that happens a lot these days)///they are the ones that will be the losers simply because they dont have enough money to pay for a proffessional nurse or whatever ,.,,,,,,, not everyone WANTS a proffessional or needs one either. they want someone they know to help them with personal things.if its possible.someone they know they can trust.in their home and not to abuse them in any way.. no one should put them in that position you describe. again something for those with not without.

so CAB and places similar to that no longer have any clout at all. why are they still in existance if thats the case? mind you even our GPs and medical/surgical/psychological specialists dont have any clout now either. years spent studying, and loads of money spent on training to get the highest qualifications in their field and tin pot so called “qualified” assessors both doing these assessments AND at DWP think they know better with no training in those fields at all not even as a medical secretary (and ive known a few of those in my long life .they all pick up so much medical knowledge from the Drs they work for even they are better trained in certain ones of the above fields than any dwp staff. as for jeremy hunt…or any others that have held that post he holds, have, as far as i know, no training in any shape or form in any of tghose fields or even a porter or cleaner in a hospital. and they think they know it all. wont say what i think should happen to the lot of em/ but think you will know anyway.

they are in existance because we , the normal people , still need someone to fight our corner. i was answering Nick.. as for all this legislation you keep throwing up in these issues, how many people have the time to go look up what they say. if you think they are relevent then for gods sake man, type out the bit you refer to. ive just gone to the following and cant find anything that could give cause to think that CAB knowingly help people to comit a crime. its not a crime to ask for help. and in my experience (as an ex welfare rights adviser in an unemployed workers centre having done all available courses so i knew what i was doing, ) being in contact with places like CAB and laissing with them, I have never come across anything suspect in that way. so kindly give us the reasons for all this chucking out of the law it is not clever. and we do have lives which need our input. even if you dont

my 40 plus years with them is just one of harassment of all of those I’ve helped and death where i failed and that’s all I could tell a judge if asked pure and simple

CAB were excellent back in the 70/80 when I use to help them out but with regret they cannot operate correctly today as to their services being in high demand to such a level they are virtually useless
this also applies to the vast amount of charities that purport to hep people in need
the bottom line is they don’t and in reality end up with being supported by the Samaritans who also are very severely stretched

Thanks Nick, Yes CAB *used* to be good. But now they’re being Bribed by the DWP To cover up their crimes. Ever heard of any CAB’s calling the Police to report any of the DWPs’ hate crimes? (or any other “advisers” doing that for that matter).

Your referencing PhobosAndDeimos is excellent and although most people will never read your in-depth style as its far too deep and depressing’ it is none the less extremely important at least one member of the public apart from lawyers keep up to date with how laws effecting the sick and disabled are working
Mp’s should also be at PhobosAndDeimos level of expertise but aren’t the same goes for journalists as they always tell me when I’m in their company (I haven’t a clue)
And that is the main reason when in the house of commons and a mp speaks you can be certain it’s complete rubbish irrespective of the topic and that’s why year on year the same old problems just keep going round in ever decreasing circles with never a end in sight to the problem

its tragic my daughter also works among mps and lords and says I’m spot on they know nothing and nether she nor I know what can be done about that
they just talk a good talk with no understanding of how a policy is going to work in the real world of which they themselves will just end complaining about slagging each other off year on year
for me when younger I had a chance of becoming a mp’ but in the early seventies turned it down as to me mp’s were just decent and at 18 couldn’t see for the life of me on what value I could possibly add
had I know then what I know now then of course I would have taken the MP route and not the bank of England route which today I bitterly regret
At least my daughter is involved to a very small degree but feel she will look elsewhere for work fulfilment in going forward preferably oversees

i see i am in high company……………. a daughter who WORKS for an MP. good for her. im surprised you didnt drop a name in there, A would be lawyer who thinks, cos an old woman cannot find time to spend all day finding his links and trying to understand them is either TALKING carbage or IS garbage…………. you come and do the housework etc i have to struggle to do every day because it takes me so long to do one job. i come on here in between when i can do no more and need a rest. i cant afford to pay a cleaner. i have to try and do it myself. bit by bit. i understood this blog was about those who were being stood on ,jumped on from a great height aka the sick, jobles, homeless. disabled etc.. i do not need to know those laws in order to have sympathy/empathy and care towards those less fortunate than i am. i have no aspirations towards being an MP.. never have had,. i want to help people as i always have done and as i cant do it either physically or financially now, so i take part in discussions on the issues.as loads of others do. and have done. but thank you for pointing out to me that i talk garbage. carry on being high and bloody mighty please do……… your no better than those you pretend to be against. goodnight

As for hugosmum70 I think she means well ‘it’s just unfortunate that the stress level that the DWP create it muddles the mind even with those with the best intentions
we know first hand how the deaths of the sick and disabled minds get muddled by the DWP before going on to commit suicide as a better option of trying to deal with them
